During his lifetime, Sun was devoted and committed to establish a modern China. People was always the first concern in his eyes. With this humanity belief, he gradualy developed a significant political philosophy which is known as Three Principles of the People (The People's Relation / Connection, The People's Power and People's Livelihood / Welfare). Yet, we still have much to work on it.

Won Star Ximen (萬事達西門館) is located exactly at Ximending area where one can enjoy shopping or dining anytime he / she wants. It has been opened for a month only, thus, everything is still very new.

Romantic color of bedding but not my cup of tea.

Similar to most hotels, the room comes with integrated shower tub, toilet and washing area.

Good that there's an in-room wardrobe which is not available in JustSleep. However, Won Star provides no safe.

By comparison, staff of JustSleep is more friendly and nice.

JustSleep (捷絲旅), a new hip hotel which is very popular among Hong Kong people. It's located at the opposite of famous shopping area, Ximen. A few minutes from Ximen MRT Station on foot.

Its room setting does beat down many other hotels. Unlike most hotels, the twin room comes with 2 desks which allow more privacy to each roommate.

Washing area, toilet and bathroom are well separated. Better facility and time management for roommates.

Staff there is nice but not too professional to handle many guests at a time. Yet, it's a good try while it's still new.

2009 Taiwan Trip - Shui Yang @ Sun Moon Lake

As I often mention, a good hotel would make a trip to be more enjoyable. Let's start from the best hotel during my trip. Shui Yang (水漾民宿) is a minshuku located in Sun Moon Lake.

The owner is a super friendly and nice gentleman. Actually, he is pleased to answer any questions his guests raise. He even allowed me to settle full payment upon arrival as I am not from Taiwan. Moreover, he has good connections with restaurants and transportation operators. Therefore, his guests can often enjoy a better rate.

Its L shape floor-to-ceiling windows in room allow you to appreciate the lake from day to night or from night to day.

Only one drawback of this minshuku is it's a bit far away. I had to take bus from the Sun Moon Lake tourist centre to it. The bus operates once an hour. If you miss it, then one have to take taxi or limo to there. Despite of the location, Shui Yang is value for money.

During my trip, what impressed me most is the majority of Taiwaneses are very friendly and helpful. It's what I didn't experience much at my first trip around 10 years ago. Probably because I joined a tour rather than arranged everything myself last time. Well, there's one funny exceptional case. A young lady replied she was lost and ran away after my friend and me asked for direction. I hope her reaction was caused by Halloween. Haha.

"In-villa BBQ" How to make it? Let's try and find out.

Neat table setting was done by an associate in short time. The BBQ set came with a few appetizers, ie chicken salad, Greek salad, etc, side dishes, ie. potato, grilled vegetables, fried rice, dessert, ie. fruits. All food was good, except the oily fried rice. Even a bat was attracted by our dinner.

Here were the cast: chicken, fish, pawn, lobster and fillet. Our cooking skills? Chef's standard of course. Thanks for the fresh ingredients. Only garlic could enhance their taste and thus no extra sauced was needed.

Better presentation, better taste.

Dinner of another night. A seafood pizza with various seafood on top. Ox tail soup was rich while potato soup was very creamy. Behind the scene, there lemongrass ice-cream and mango orange ice-cream were awaiting us.

Extra: A melon in a Singapore supermarket which haven't seen in HK.

Retreat in Bintan and Singapore - Villa on the Rocks

Among many world renowned resorts, I picked Banyan Tree where to spend 3D2N because of it's reputation in running premium resorts.

Welcome to my independent villa. If you really love the villa, you can buy it and then you are entitled to share profits with the resort developer. For me, I prefer to be a visitor.

2 reasons why I chose Villa on the Rocks. The first is private jacuzzi and the second is boundless ocean view.

In line with the destination, all decorations are in Indonesian style.

Very rural feel roof.

This sofa is very comfortable to lie on and relax.

Shower in front of the ocean.

Towel art is very common in hotels during recent years. This one is royal peacock.

Complimentary items: tree top bananas, sea salt and a beanie turtle.

Where is a good choice for retreat? Certainly a place where you can receive good friend's warm hospitality. And thus I picked Singapore again. To make the break more relaxing, we further retreated to Bintan, a beautiful place with international resorts. Bintan is a territory of Indonesia but is mainly managed by Singapore. It just takes an hour to there from Singapore by ferry. So convenient.

Let's stay in the city for some more moments before retreat. Here's the newly launched Terminal 3 at Changi Airport. Spacious and well-equiped. It's also the home of giant airbus, A380. This infrastructure demonstrates the Singppore governemtn does have determination to outperform its neighbours.

Boston the Scholar - Good Accomodation as a Good Treat

If you wanna to have an enjoyable trip, don't forget to find a nice hotel. Not necessary luxurious but convenient, clean, polite staff, and better well equipped. Harborside Inn does match all the mentioned requirements. (haha sound like a commercial ad). At least I personally don't have good impression to places where accomodations were bad.

New England Aquarium and Faneuil Hall Marketplace are in walking distance. Subway station is just steps away. So easy to get some fun or grab some food at anytime. The hotel also provides free internet access. Just get connected to find what's hot of the day and enjoy. Average rate is around US$120. Very reasonable.

Boston the Scholar - Go Around by Public Transportation

Talking about transportation, Boston outperforms Manhattan and Washing D.C. again. All the 3 cities offer subway one day pass. The Boston one will expire 24 hours after the purchase time. Unlikely, Manhattan pass will expire at the midnight even you get it in the evening of the day. For the D.C. pass, it cannot be used during peak hours. Therefore, only the Boston one is a real one day pass.

The subway pass is good. How about the subway system? Both trains and stations are clean and safe. And the network covers most tourism spots. So, the subway is the best way for going around in the city.

Ferry is a good choice if you wanna travel between Boston downtown and Charlestown Navy Yard. The fee is also covered by the Boston one day pass. Fabulous pay-cruise view like is available upstairs at no extra cost.

China Town bus was F and my choice to Boston. The reasons were very simple. It's cheap and reliable. This bus company did provide excellent services. We wanted call a limo when we back to Manhattan at late night. It's staff not only advised us limo company numbers but also accompanied us until a limo arrived for the sake of safety. We were very lucky to meet so many good people during the trip.

Boston is definitely a lovely city. It's our first time to have a passer-by took the initiative to show us direction in the US. The lady even accompanied us for a while to ensure we caught the correct way. With this warm experience, how can we not love Boston.

We were crossing Charles Bridge, a bridge is open to both human and vehicles. Thanks F for showing how close the 2 types of target customers were.

This dry dock was responsible for war ship's maintenance. Now it is a symbol of sophisticated old engineering.

USS Constitution, the unique attraction of the navy yard. It carries the proud of the US as this warship had won them many victories in the past. The lady wearing the warship's uniform actually serves in the US Navy and is appointed as a tour guide.

Welcome on board! Here is gun deck where attacks took part.

Sleeping deck. A sailor enjoyed no privacy while a general had some. Anyway, no fun to sleep in wavy sea.

Navy sailors could take a rest but not must a good rest. The reason was they were required to be ready 7 x 24. They could climb up to the gun deck through the ceiling when there was any emergency.

In the museum on another side, one can try to shoot. Lucky it's only a game. War is better to be prohibited.

Whale Watching Cruise is a strongly promoted attraction in Boston. Many operators even guarantee they will provide a refund if no whale is found. Actually, it's not easy for visitors to receive a free ride because every whale watching boat is well-equipped with advanced radar system. F and me planned to enjoy a pay ride. Unluckily, the cruise was not in service due to strong wind.

Fine, simply touring around in New England Aquarium.Its outlook has no connection to the sea except the logo.

One can pamper the baby lobster under instruction of its staff. Hope you won't find this baby looks too tempting.

These are probably the earliest residents in the earth. Now they are neighbors of the baby lobster.

These penguins were busy showing their sovereign rights while the 2 staff were cleaning their home hard. Very funny scene.

We are not finding whale but nemo.

Lionfish, beautiful but poisonous.

Boston the Scholar - Seafood Paradise

Besides of education, Boston is also famous in provision of fresh seafood. The most well-known is Boston lobster which is named after it's origin.

Lobster, lobster, here I come. This lobster weighted around 1.5 pounds before stuffed. With stuffing of biscuit and other seafood, the lobster tasted sweet as well as crispy. Don't forget the butter source which can makes the taste perfect. Conclusion: extremely delicious! Crab cake was another good dish. Clam chowder soup was creamy and rich. But of course lobster was still the best.

Next day, F and me were still in love with the taste of Boston seafood. Thus, we decided to have seafood for lunch. We shared lobster sandwich and shrimp sandwich and each had a bowl of clam chowder. Lobster was still my favourite.

Feeling very hungry after writing this entry. Time to have some food.

In contrast to its name, the Hope Diamond did not give any hope to its previous hopeless owners. So the diamond was donated to the museum finally.

All were created by premium French craftsmanship. Gifts from Napoleon to his second wife.

This necklace combines diamonds and emeralds was owned by an Indian Maharajah. Is there any story behind?

Weather Observation Course by Hong Kong Observatory - Lesson 2

Some weather information, such as temperature is not possible to be observed by our eyes. Thus, meteorological instruments are required.

This is thermometer shed. The open design allows better air circulation and can lead to more accurate temperature measurement in the air. The slanting roof prevents sunlight to affect the temperature inside the shed. This shed is a major source of our daily weather information.

Thermometer screen box is another instrument to measure temperature. Yet, the thermometer shed is better because of better air circulation.

This small bucket collects raindrop if any. With a cylinder, we can know rainfall information in Hong Kong. The instrument is called ordinary raingauge.

For heavy rain, more accurate information is needed. Show time for this drop counting rainfall recorder.

Apart from understanding the instruments, students also learnt about weather report and weather related proverbs. The former is very useful because we can now decode a lot of information from a simple symbol. The latter is more of fun. But it's good to know different season or geographical location may affect the accuracy of the proverbs.

The course combines only 2 lessons. Nevetherless, it's a serious course. We had lots of notes, including a CD version. We had a weather observation exercise to pracise what we had learnt in lesson 1. We had class graduation photos. The most important point is we are awarded a certificate. It really suprised me.

Moreover, we have a pen and a keyring. The yellow figure is Break representing Lightening in the "Weather Family" cartoon. Other members can be found at here.

The 1883 Building is a heritage which was built in 1883. Now, it serves as the main office for the government department.

Practice is the best way of learning how to observe weather. This fish scale like clouds are altocumulus, Ac in short (高積雲). A member of middle cloud (中雲族) with a bottom height between 8,000 - 15,000 feet. Weather is usually good if only they are in sky alone.

Another practice is visibility. It's measured by distance between the farthest and visibly clear object from the standpoint. This information is useful for all types of transport.

Satellites for collecting weather information from observatories of other countries / cities. They are located on the roof of another building at the headquarter.

HK typhoon warnig signals displayed in the exhibition hall. Signal 8 is probably the most welcome by the majoriy of workforce / students as they can have day off.

The Museum of Natural History is one of the most popular museums in the US. It embraces a wide range of collections about evolution of the earth and human civilization.

Marine science was one of my dream subjects. It is fun to explore the mysterious sea where we are not always there. In the museum, one can even have an adventure to ancient sea million years ago easily without diving equipments or time machine.

What attracted me to Washington D.C. were the admission-free museums, national zoo and the Capitol. Apart from these areas, D.C is a very boring capital. It is not as fun as Tokyo, not as cultural as Vienna, not as historical as Prague, not as fast growing as Beijing. The downtown area is worse. It's poor and dirty. And there are many mentals whom even patrols pretend they are not around. I want to visit the museums again but certainly not the downtown there.

Several sailors are walking around the station. Not sure if they are working hard to fuifill recruiting quota.

Concrete jungle consists of various concrete trees. One can love the jungle as a whole but not necessarily love every tree.

This luxury tree is located on the Fifth Avenue where is surrounded by brands aiming high markets. The sculptured door is my favourite.

The Rockefeller Center is a complex of trees that was planted in the golden age of capitalism. It houses a number of top-tier companies of the us and even the world. Being a Greek myths lover, I am attracted to the Zeus decoration and the Prometheus sculpture.

St Patrick's Cathedral is considered as "the noblest temple". The answer can be found in its scale, architecture and building materials. etc.

Sculptures can often catch my attention.

The inner beauty of the United States Post Office Building is more outstanding. It opens 24-hour a day and have machines selling stamps.

Thanks for the local media that it sometimes does a great job. Just like the latest 3-episode TV program, "On the Road 3 - Guizhou" (向世界出發3 - 貴州). The guest, "Yu Mo Lin" (余慕蓮) is a 70-yr-old experienced actress. Similar to her image on TV, she's also being perceived as one of ordinary people who attracts almost no attention.

Small but powerful. Yu is not rich, however, she generously donated around one third of her retirement pay, ie HK$ 80,000 to Guizhou 2 years ago. Together with HK$ 30,000 Guizhou government funding, a standard school is built which has provided proper education to hundreds of children from poor mountainous areas.

I believe most HK people just have recognized her act of charity from the program. Because Yu never sold her good will for fame or gain. On the contrary, she simply wishes the children can improve their lives with knowledge. Her kindness, sincerity, humbleness has allowed us to understand we should not underestimate the power of small acts of charity.

Wanderings in Manhattan - Food for Food Lovers

Mexican food is pretty popular in the US. Probably because the country just bordered south of the US and there are many Mexican immigrants in the states. A wide range of sauces makes the ingredients stuffed in tortilla or masa very tasty. My favourite food in the US. The picture shows my dinner of chicken quesadilla with sour cream dip in a small mexican resturant. My friend claimed Carlifornia has better Mexican food.

Pinkberry is famous for its Korean style ice-cream, ie yougurt with choices of toppings. Taste likes Yault (益力多), a bit sour but refreshing. A good partner of fresh fruits. The shop is hot in Manhattan now. Not to miss after having a traditional Korean cuisine in Little Korea.

Besides Little Korea, there's Little Italy in Mahatan. Actually, only a street in Chinatown. Italians like to have meals with family members, thus, the food portion is always huge. Stuffed mushrooms is the best of the night.

The resturant hires a band. This nice and passionate guitar player brought lots of fun to our dinner. His partner is not worth to mention however.

This chicken kabba was bought from a flea market located @ 5th Avenue. An exotic choice. Pitythat it's neither juicy nor tender.

Hot dot and ice-crean are the most common snacks throughout the US because they are cheap and quick. In a busy day, just grab one to recharge.

Despite of numerous choices of food, I don't consider New York as a food paradise because it is very expensive to dine out. Even a hot dog can cost over US$2. Anyway, tourists often don't mind to pay for experience.

What made the differences between these 2 pictures?

One was taken in cloudy day while another one was taken in sunny day;
One use no zoom while another one use zoom.

The first statement is correct. But the most important point is the pictures were taken from different distances.

The smaller photo was taken on Staten Island Ferry which provides free service 24 hours a day between Manhattan and the Staten Island. This lovely service allow passengers to admire the majestic view of Manhattan coast line together with the Statute of Liberty, the Ellis Island, Brooklyn Bridge and so on in a 25-minutes ride. Wonderful choice for budget travellers who just wanna say hi to the statute.

A few days later, I was invited me to have a relaxing cruise. The cruise lasted for around 2 hours and came with a buffet lunch. Food and services were nice. Nevertheless, the view was the real main course. Passengers could enjoy a better view because the cruise ship sailed much closer to the sightseeing points just mentioned above. A choice for tourists chasing quality lifestyle.

Subway is the best transportation tool for travelling in Manhattan. Why? It's being known as one of the worst systems, in term of security and efficiency, etc. Similar to the public order of the city, it has been improved sharply in the recent years. I found it was safe for single traveller like me. If you really concern safety, just choose a car with patrol or scan through the cars before getting on. Just a note that some beggars will take subway on weekends morning.

The network there is very comprehensive. As it almost covers most tourism spots, it's very convenient to travel around. Another advantage is subway can save you from losing valuable time in traffic jam. Cost is very important too. Buy one-day pass if you will consume subway services 4 times or more a day. Or buy 7-day pass for longer stay.

Yet, the over hundred-year-old system is aging. Thus, lots of rejuvenation works often take place on weekends, like re-routing. So, don't forget always take a subway map with you in case you have to change your transportation plan.

Some subway stations are decorated in line of famous landmarks of its location. This cute elephant tile reflects the American Museum of Natural History is around.

Bus is also a low priced transportation tool. It may not be very convenient for those who are not familiar with the city. Also, it is easily caught by congestion during peak hours.

Alternatively, limousine or car rental services are available in Manhattan. This limousine with 10 pax capacity was hired by my friend on wedding day. It does look cool for big occasions. For long distance travel (between Manhattan and New Jersey) at night, the rate was reasonable though not cheap. I felt very satisfied with the services as it was very reliable and safe. I didn't prefer cab because my friends and me once met a dishonest driver. Next, the drivers compete crazily to get customers that endanger others' lives.

Sightseeing bus services probably suitable for tourists who wanna visit tourism spots door to door. But quite expensive for those with limited and money.

The Empire State Building, named after the nickname of New York State (what an imperial name in a democratic country) was once the tallest building in the world. Thanks for the movie "King Kong" that led the building has become a famous landmark.

Mini Empire State Building is a major decoration inside the building.

In order to encourage visitors to use stairs rather than elevators between 80/F to 86/F, a staff kept saying: "Come on guys, you can do it". The result? Not very effective of course.

We are still on Wall Street. The focus, however, has shifted to this Trinity Church where E had wedding ceremony here. Guess how the young couple found this elegant historical church? They google it.

I always wonder how ancient craftsmen made such lively decorations.

Colorful windows and cloths enriched the romantic atmosphere of the church.

Anyway, I could tell you that the young couple, especially the bride attracted many passers-by to take photos with her and lots of blessings too. The most enjoyable memory during my trip is I admired the Vincent van Gogh's masterpiece - Starry Night in museum. It's real, not replica!!! There are so many renowned drawings / paintings in the world. But only Vincent van Gogh's masterpiece - "The Starry Night" can really touch my feeling.

The vibrant brush strokes brings everything in the picture to the real life. I can feel the moon shinning, the stars twinkling, the wind blowing, the tree and grass dancing over a tranquil village .... and the painter's passion when he was painting the scenery ...... and the loneliness ......

Van Gough is recognized as one of the greatest artists the world, however, how many people can understand his strong emotions? Can the composer of the song "Vincent"?

Hope really can have my second and even third US trips soon. Besides, here my is brief impression about the places visisted during my trip:

US - a fun place for travel
Long Island - a nice and beautiful place with fresh air, however, one can't travel around without a car
New York - an always busy and energetic metropolis with many wonderful museums. safe to travel alone
Boston - a neat and organized city with well-educated and nice people. seafood there is great.
Washington D.C. - good that there r so many museums charge no admission. downtown is poor and dirty.
New Jersey - close to Manhattan but things are less expensive. I didn't explore it as I often spent my time in Manhattan.

Wanna see something other than classic buildings? Follow the crowd to the Hundertwasser House Vienna.

This landmark is designed by Austrian artist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser and was built between 1983 and 1986. It is composed of apartments, offices, private terraces and communal terraces. Its uneven floor and roof, colorful walls, together with 250 tress and bushes growing from inside let it stand out from numerous of old architecture and become a hot sightseeing point. I'm also interested in its interior but no chance to step inside during the trip.

I love everything in ancient Greek style, including this building with 4 ancient Greek-like statutes as pillars. The location is near Volkstheater metro station.

Austrian Parliament Building, was built between 1894 to 1883 in Greek architectural style with an implcication of antique Greece as the "cradle of democracy"

The Athena Fountain in front of the building is a notable tourist attraction.

St. Peter's Church is believed built in the early Middle Age, probably the oldest church in Vienna.

Does the McDonald at this hundreds-year-old taste better?

The erection of the Pestsäule took 14 years and involved several designers with different preference. It was finally completed in baroque scene.

St Stephan's Cathedral is a symbol of Vienna for centuries. Similar to many existing historical buildings, it was built in Gothic style.

The Cathedral is located in the major shopping area of Vienna, surrounded by numbers of shops.

Because of heavy traffic, street performer is attracted to deliver a show here.

Also. there are many concert sales in traditional costumes. If you say you know English, they will show you a portfolio of the concert hall and show they work for. If you don't want to be disturbed, simply shake your head or hand and they will let you go. Among all of the opera houses in town, The Vienna State Opera is the most reputable while the Großer saal (金色大廳) is the most luxurious.

Welcome to the Hofburg Imperial Palace (also known as winter residence). It was the palace of the Habsburg dynasty of Austro-Hungarian empire, a powerful house in European history. Today, it is still the residence of governor - President of Austria.

Empress Maria-Theresien who led Austria to become a strong empire by promoting commerce, developing agriculture, building military force, introducing education reforms, etc. Austrians still feel thankful for her contributions till now.

Prince Eugene of Savoy, one of the greatest generals in Austrian history.

Archduke Charles of Austria, another great military character in Austria.

The new castle, a large-scale building complex of the palace.

Museum of Fine Arts (up) and Museum of Natural History (down) are twin architectures because of their appearance. One way to distinguish between the buildings is by the statues on top. The one with Athena is Museum of Fine Arts while the one with Apollo is Museum of Natural History.

Seegrotte means an underground lake, a rare natural phenomenon.

A boat trip is good to experience the silence of the lake. Due to the darkness, not many photos were taken successfully.

See those pink marks. That is quartz. The seegrotte was a quartz mine.

Horses were major carriers in the mine. Here is a stable.

The Seagrotte was also an aircraft manufacturing factory during world war 2.

Here's a rest area in Austria. By comparison with the ones in Czech, it's more sophisticated and modern. Yet, the most obvious difference is the cost of living, eg. the same ice-cream cone here costs 5 times more than that in Czech.

Food in Czech can be simply described as meaty, meaty, meaty.

This large roasted pork knee is for one pax only. The knee was very tender. Do you know which part was most delicious? It's the meat near the bone with little fat. You won't forget the taste after having it.

Roasted pig again.

Look like traditional Chinese roasted pig but this one contains less fat. Can be served with mustard.

Roasted duck, a very traditional Czech dish. The taste was quite alright. The white one is bread dumpling and the yellow one is another kind of dumpling. Both tasted so so.

There are many delicious dishes, like smoked salmon. Pity that I forgot to take photos.

Prague Summer - Architecture Exhibition‧布拉格之夏 - 建築大觀園

Prauge was endorsed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992. With the official announcement, the beauty of this cultural city has been widespread and numerous tourists have been attracted. The local government has spent great efforts on conservation, like prohibiting large vehicle to enter into historical area, such as Charles Bridge, Own Town Square, etc. Probably this is the major reason why we can still admire the original scene of "The Golden City".

Some old buildings are sold to private companies. These buildings may serve as hotels, restaurants.etc and open for public after renovation. The picture shows Four Seasons Hotel.

Old elegant street lamp, which is similar to those in Central, Hong Kong.

Apart from culture conservation, Prague also allows room for creativity of contemporary arts. The modern building in the picture was constructed in 1996 with a nickname of Dancing House because of its outlook. Can you see there's a gentleman dancing with a lady?

What is the "building"? This big brown round pillar is a public washroom. If you wanna have a look inside, just put in a coin and you can become the self-served guest. It is located in the premium brand area, just next to LV. Probably the government understand people usually spend much time on shopping in the branded shops, thus, they set such a caring facility there.

St. Vitus Cathedral is the most beautiful building in Prague in my eyes. This church has set a typical example of Gothic architecture since 1344. The cathedral is so large that it's hardly to take a full view in one picture.
聖維特大教堂 - 本人眼中位於布拉格最美麗的建築物。這座教堂於1344年建立，乃典型的哥德式建築。單一張相片無法拍得其全貎，可見其規模之大。

The main tower, yet, was finished in Baroque style years later.
